Guide to Installing Metamask on a Desktop

Step 1: Visit the MetaMask Website

  1. Open your web browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, Brave, etc.).

  2. Navigate to the official MetaMask website: Click here

  3. Ensure you are on the official site to avoid phishing scams. Always double-check the URL.

Step 2: Download the Extension

  1. On the MetaMask website, click on the “Download” button

  2. Choose your browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Brave) from the list of options.

  3. You will be redirected to the browser’s extension/add-on store (e.g., Chrome Web Store for Google Chrome).

Step 3: Install the Extension

  1. Click the “Add to Chrome” button (or equivalent for your browser).

  2. A popup will appear detailing the permissions MetaMask requires. Click “Add Extension” to confirm and continue with the installation.

Step 4: Setup Your MetaMask Wallet

  1. Once the installation is complete, a MetaMask icon (a fox head) should appear in your browser’s toolbar.

  2. Click on the MetaMask icon to open the extension.

  3. Read and agree to the MetaMask terms of use.

  4. Choose whether you want to set up a new wallet or import an existing one.

If you're new to MetaMask, you will likely want to set up a new wallet.

Step 5: Secure Your New Wallet

  1. Create a strong and unique password. This will be used to secure your MetaMask extension.

  2. MetaMask will generate a ‘seed phrase’ for you. This is a series of 12 words that will allow you to recover your wallet if you lose access to it. It is crucial that you keep this seed phrase safe and never share it with anyone.

  3. Confirm your seed phrase by entering the words in the order they were given to you.

Step 6: Start Using MetaMask

  1. Once you've securely saved your seed phrase and confirmed it, your MetaMask wallet will be set up and ready to use.

  2. You can now view your account, your balance, and your transaction history, send and receive cryptocurrencies, and interact with decentralized applications (DApps) through MetaMask.

Important Tips:

  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone. It is the key to your funds, and anyone with access to it can take control of your assets.

  • Always double-check the MetaMask website URL and only install MetaMask from official and trusted sources to avoid phishing scams.

  • Regularly update MetaMask to ensure you have the latest security features.
